USA: Kansas - Loose Meat Sandwich

A loose meat sandwich (also known as 'loosemeat' or a 'tavern sandwich') has been popular in the USA since the 1920s. It's similar to a Sloppy Joe but doesn't have the tomato sauce. A chain restaurant in Kansas called the Nu Way Cafe has claimed their sandwiches as the reason for it's popularity in Kansas. We're looking forward to trying them!

Ingredients:

500g minced beef

1 cup beef stock

1 tablespoon brown mustard

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

2 bread rolls

yellow mustard

pickles

Saute the beef in some oil until it's browned and no pink can be seen.

Drain the beef then add the mustard, stock, salt, pepper and Worcestershire sauce. Stir well and then simmer for about 30 minutes until the liquid has reduced a lot.

Split the bread buns and put some yellow mustard on each side.

Pile up the meat on each one and top with the sliced pickles.

Wrap in foil and place in the oven at 150 C for 10 minutes.

Ooh, I loved this one! The bread softens in the oven and the yellow mustard soaks into it. The pickle slices and mustard go perfectly with the spicily seasoned beef to give a lovely, flavourful bite every time. It just works! It's messy to eat of course with the loose meat dropping out everywhere but who cares, it's delicious. Yum 😄
