We were under the assumption that Coney Dogs were the same as Chili Dogs but that's not true! So here we are about to sample a Traditional Coney Dog from the state of Michigan especially popular in the city of Detroit.
Ingredients:
500g minced beef
1 onion
1 cup ketchup
1/4 sugar
1/4 cup white vinegar
1/4 cup mustard
1/2 teaspoon celery salt
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
8 hot dogs
8 hot dog buns
More diced onion and mustard to serve
The first job is to make the beef sauce. Dice the onion and sauté it in a little oil until starting to soften.
While that's happening put all the other ingredients (except the beef) in a slow cooker and mix well.
Add the minced beef to the onion and cook until browned. Tip the beef and onion into the slow cooker and mix into the sauce.
Cook on LOW for 2-3 hours. When you're ready to eat prepare some more diced onion in a bowl and heat up/grill the hot dogs to your preference. Serve with the beef sauce on top of the hot dog with mustard and diced onion on top of that.
I really liked these hot dogs. The sauce was thick and vinegary. Very savoury in flavour but without the spices and beans that would make it a chilli dog. The mustard went really well with the beef and the addition of chopped raw onion gave a nice crunchy texture. I can see why they're so popular!
