I've always wanted to try one of these and have somehow never gotten around to it. Today is the day though! Las Vegas has many famous restaurants serving patty melts with several claiming to make the best one. I wouldn't mind having to judge!
Ingredients:
6 tablespoons butter
1 onion
500g minced beef
5 dashes Worcestershire sauce
4 slices rye bread
8 slices Swiss cheese
Peel and slice the onion then sauté it in 2 tablespoons of butter until softened.
Mix the minced beef, Worcestershire sauce, salt & pepper in a bowl and form into 2 large rye bread shaped patties.
Cook these in a frying pan with 2 more tablespoons of butter. Turn halfway to ensure both sides are well cooked. Use a lid to steam for a few minutes so the centre of each patty will be cooked through.
Compile your sandwiches with bread, cheese, patty, onions, cheese and bread.
Melt another tablespoon of butter in the pan and cook the sandwiches until the bread is starting to brown. Remove and melt the last tablespoon of butter to cook the other side until the bread is browning and the cheese is melting.
Cut the sandwiches in half and serve at once!
We really enjoyed these hybrid burgers/sandwiches! The rye bread worked really well to hold the sandwich together and didn't break up. The swiss cheese had melted covering the patty and bread. The meat of the patty could've done with a little more flavouring but overall it was great. It would've been better if I'd had a weight to press down the patty as it cooked as it rebounded into a thicker patty. Still this is a great recipe which made for a hearty lunch on a cold December day.
