Costa Rica - Atol de Naranja

Day one of my week of blog foods, exciting stuff! Now I'm under 100 dishes left to go I feel like I'm finally getting somewhere :) This dish is an orange pudding from Costa Rica. It's a simple recipe with only 4 main ingredients, just the way I like them!

1 1/2 cups fresh orange juice
2 cups brown sugar
1/2 cup cornflour
1 tbls butter

Orange peel and whipped cream to garnish if you like.

Put the cornflour, sugar and orange juice in a pan and simmer on a medium heat. Keep stirring.

Whatever you do don't get bored of continuous stirring and wander off to check your emails instead. I did this and came back to find the pudding incredibly thick suddenly. I had to quickly pour it into a cool bowl and stir it to keep it smooth. That's why there's no pictures of that stage!!

Stir in the butter and pour into small bowls. Put in the fridge to chill. Whip some cream and grate some orange peel to garnish.

This pudding was like nothing I've ever tasted before. It looked like orange jam but the texture wasn't jammy at all. It was smooth and creamy. It had a strong orange flavour which was tangy but also sweet due to the brown sugar. The whipped cream went really well with it to stop it being too sweet. The kids ate most of it but weren't too keen to finish it off. JD enjoyed the texture but still has no taste buds. I really enjoyed it and had to stop myself finishing off Leigh and Erin's too :D

Coming tomorrow: Pljeskavica from Montenegro x

  1. Hi!
I stumbled upon your blog while searching for Costa Rican recipes. Haven't gone through the rest of your blog yet but I sure will.
I am on a similar mission but on a bit smaller scale ;)
    Fifa worldcup meals (soccer).
The last two weeks I have cooked a meal from one of the countries that played during diner time.
The first game of the evening is at 18:00 here.
    Here is the Netherlands.

I only intended to cook for the first round (which ended last thursday)
But since we are still in the tournament and there are still games on at six (and because it's so much fun to do)
I continued cooking for some evenings...not all of them though.
But tonight we're eating Germany ;)
Last night we ate Mexican our opponent yesterday....the lost.
Our next game is against Costa Rica.
That game is not during diner, so I was looking for desserts and snacks.
This one is probably not going on the menu that night since orange is also our national color and we're only eating opponents...don't want to jinx that ;)
But I am surely gonna try this one. Probably tonight for dessert.

Anyway good luck with your mission. I'll stop by regularly.

Though in Dutch, my diners are posted on my wordpress blog.

    1. That sounds like a great idea to celebrate football with food, well done! I wish I could read your blog. Thanks for reading mine :)
