USA: Ohio - Cincinnati Chili

Cincinnati Chili is another food brought to America by immigrants. This time it was Macedonian immigrants in the 1920s that started the Ohio love story with chili. It seems very different from chili we normally make. JD and I can't wait to try it especially as it's served over spaghetti.

Ingredients:

1 onion
500g minced beef
500ml tomato passata
1 1/2 tablespoons cider vinegar
4 garlic cloves, finely chopped
2 teaspoons cocoa powder
1 tablespoon tomato puree
3 tablespoons chili powder
1 teaspoon oregano
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon all spice
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 cups water

Toppings:

grated cheese
chopped onion

spaghetti to serve

This is a nice simple recipe to make. It only seems to have 3 parts! Firstly, chop the onion and saute until it starts to go soft.

Secondly, put all the other ingredients in the pan with the onion. Stir well.

Thirdly, simmer for 2 hours.

That's it! You now have a much anticipated big bowl of Cincinnati Chili to eat. Serve on top of spaghetti with chopped raw onion and grated cheese on top.

It looks delicious! The liquid had reduced down to a lovely thick sauce which was a rich dark brown in colour. Sadly, we didn't really get to enjoy it. We refill our spice jars from bags because it's cheaper but last time we bought a refill during the corona food shortage of 2020 Asda sent Extra HOT Chili Powder which we put in our mild chili powder jar. Oops! I inconveniently forgot all this prior to making the chili so used 3 tablespoons of powder as instructed. It was too fucking hot to eat! My lips had an unpleasant burning sensation for about an hour after it and JD had a churning stomach immediately which lasted all the next day. I don't think there's anything worse than sitting down to a delicious looking meal that you can't enjoy. We'll be making this again sometime soon when the sadness of it has passed so we can enjoy it properly. I may update this post in the future to say how it tastes!
