Uruguay - Chivito

Last recipe from Uruguay today! A Chivito sandwich is their national dish. It can have many variations but the main ingredients are thinly fried steak, bacon, mozzarella and egg. I decided to make JD and I one for lunch yesterday and here's how I got on.

Ingredients:

1 baguette
1 steak
1 ball mozzarella
4 rashers bacon
lettuce
mayonnaise
beef tomato
2 eggs
salt & pepper

The steak needs to be thin to fry so put it in a freezer bag and bash it with a rolling pin or other heavy object.

Season the steak on each side with salt & pepper then fry for a few minutes on each side. Add the bacon to the pan and fry for a few minutes on each side again.

While the meats are frying you can prepare the rest of the sandwich. Split the baguette and half lengthways. Spread some mayo on the bottom half. Add lettuce and some slices of beef tomato.

Take the meats out of the frying pan to rest a moment and add the eggs to fry. Add the steak to the sandwich and top it with sliced mozzarella.

When the eggs are done, add the bacon and egg to the sandwich too.

Cut each sandwich in half so you can enjoy the layering inside.

It was a lovely hot sandwich, tasty with lots of different textures. The steak hadn't stayed thin so I had to horizontally slice it to make two thinner steaks. This worked well and made the sandwich easier to bite into. The sandwich was a bit difficult to eat as it had so many fillings but we managed it! Very nice, would eat again!
