Bircher Muesli was invented by the Swiss doctor and nutritionist Maximilian Oskar Bircher-Benner in the 19th century. He believed that what we ate could aid health and recuperation from illness. Quite different beliefs from his peers at the time. He especially maintained that raw foods would give us these benefits as they contain direct energy from the sun.
Either way, it's good for you to eat Bircher Muesli. I've never made it before but it looks delicious! This recipe is for 2 people.
Ingredients:
50g oats
6 tablespoons fruit juce
1 apple (grated)
2 tablespoons dried fruit
2 tablespoons chopped nuts
1 teaspoon mixed seeds
1 teaspoon honey
2 tablespoons yoghurt
Put the oats in a container with a lid. Add whichever dried fruit you are using (sultanas for me) and then spoon over the fruit juice (pineapple). Give it a mix, close the container and leave overnight.
In the morning top with the remaining ingredients and eat.
It certainly tastes healthy! JD was disgusted by the soft texture of the soaked oats so didn't eat his. I wasn't keen either due to the bloated soaked sultanas but the grated apple, nuts and seeds were all lovely with the soft oats. It's appealing that everything is raw and it's a clever way to soften the oats enough to eat them. I don't think it's something I'd eat regularly even though it's very organised to have breakfast started the night before. I'll stick to granola and yoghurt I think!
