Plăcinte are pastries that can be filled with a variety of sweet or savoury fillings. They're also probably the worst baking experience I've ever had!
Ingredients:
6 cups flour
2 cups water
1 tbls yeast
1 tsp salt
1 pack ricotta cheese
Chopped dill
1 egg
Salt & pepper
Mix the ricotta, egg, dill, salt and pepper in a bowl. Set aside for later.
Mix the flour, salt, yeast and water to form a dough. The recipe said to keep the dough sticky and not to add too much flour.
Break the ball into several pieces.
Roll out the dough to make really thin vague rectangle shapes. The recipe said to use oil on the counter to roll out the dough so it wouldn't stick. It did though, to my hands, to the counter, to the rolling pin. It was really hot in the kitchen so that didn't help. More oil didn't help and it was really messy. Put some of the filling on the pastry and then fold it over and over itself to make a triangle shaped pastry. That was the plan anyway, mine turned out more pasty shapes but I was happy to get them folded up and on the tray since the stickiness was a pain in the arse. :D
The recipe said to leave them for half an hour before cooking. That's where it all went wrong. They expanded incredibly and filled the tray completely.
After baking they looked more like a flat loaf of bread.
This recipe was really disappointing. It didn't work out well at all and the instructions were a bit vague. The end result tasted quite nice as a sort of cheese filled bread but it was very different from how it was meant to be. Ah well, maybe tomorrows dish will be more of a success. :)
Coming tomorrow: Stuffed bread with sausage and vegetables from Qatar.
